I came to Japan on March 23, 1989. Throughout my long stay I renewed my visa annually, going to Tokyo to do it. A few years ago I was pleased to have gotten a three year visa, thus avoiding the long wait in the Tokyo Immigration office.
When Mako and I moved back in 2005 I had to re-apply for a visa and chose the "Spouse Visa". A very nice lady at the Mito Immigration office suggested that I apply for Permanent Residence. Until she mentioned it I'd not considered myself a permanent resident ... but I am. I applied. I got it.
On March 22, 2007 I went to Mito to have the Permanent Resident Visa stamp affixed to my US passport.
It felt REALLY, REALLY good!
